Why I'm a part of Ubunye: My mom grew up in the rural American South in conditions not dissimilar from those in much of Southern Africa: no running water or electricity, extreme poverty, few or no educational opportunities. She consequently left school at age 12 and never got the opportunities her intelligence merited.
Mom’s story motivates me today to make sure that those who find themselves with few or no chances to get an education or advance themselves, due to the random lottery of birth that lands some people in affluent circumstances and some in deprived ones, get the opportunities they deserve. Cameron Bellamy’s willingness to literally put his life on the line through extreme athletics to benefit Ubunye inspired me to step up to do what I can to help the young people of Southern Africa get a fighting chance at creating better lives for themselves.
